How Does Spray Tanning Work? Is It Safe?

The main active tanning ingredient used in spray tanning formulas is Dihydroxyacetone (known as DHA) which reacts with the air and the amino acids in the top layer of the skin, causing it to gradually darken. DHA is combined with a variety of blends of unique skin conditioning ingredients to protect and hydrate the skin whilst providing natural looking tan results. Everyone has different levels of amino acids which is why we all tan differently in the natural sun and why every self tanning result is individual to you and your skin tone. The 8hr and Express tanning solutions contain a guide colour so you can see where the tan has been applied whilst also giving your skin an instant bronzed glow - unlike the Clear solution which has no guide colour. The DHA works with your skin over 8 hours (varies depending on solution used) to develop a lasting, natural bronzed colour which is revealed when the guide colour is washed off. As the tanning process occurs on the top layer of the skin, your spray tan will fade naturally after 5-7 days with your normal skin cycle. Make sure to follow our aftercare & maintenance tips to keep your tan looking glowing for longer! Yes, it is completely safe! DHA is non-toxic and the skin darkening reaction is confined to the top later of the skin only – nothing is absorbed into the body. This is highlighted in the way that a fake tan fades away slowly as the skin cells undergo their natural regeneration process and flake off the body.

How Long Will The Results Of My Spray Tan Last?

Your tan will last between 5-7 days, if you prepare well and follow our aftercare and maintenance guide then it will last even longer! Your daily skincare regime and lifestyle will determine how your tan will fade. Just like a natural tan, a spray tan will fade as your skin sheds dead cells. The more you look after your tan, the longer you can expect it to last and the more even the fade will be.

How Long Does A Spray Tan Appointment Take?

It takes just 15 minutes for a full body spray tan! It’s super quick, hassle free and promises to create a flawless finish. However a full appointment will take 20-30 minutes, to allow set up and break down of all equipment.

How Should I Prepare For My Spray Tan?

Remove any unwanted hair a couple of days before your sunless tanning session. This is especially important if you tend to wax your legs and underarms because it gives time for your open pores to close up. If fake tan is applied immediately after a wax it can lead to a spotty finish and possible streaks. Be sure to moisturise every day AFTER your appointment in order to hydrate the top layer of skin cells that will react with the clever darkening ingredients in spray tan solution.
